Get a modem and Internet account

Get a modem....

First we will learn how to configure the computer to access the Internet. Even if you're already connected, read on maybe one day you will need to setup an Internet connection...

ModemYou need 3 basic things to go online:
modem, Internet account, phone line.
We have already mentioned the modem, it's a small device that acts as a translator, since computer and telephone signals are different, the modem translates the signals and hooks your computer to the phone system.
If you want to get a little techie: a modem translates the computer digital signals into analog so the phone line can transmit them to the other side. The modem helps computers communicate together across phone lines.
Even before the expansion of the Internet and even until now, people use modems to connect computers together and exchange information. Maybe you've heard about BBS...

The modem is the most common way people access the internet,
Although it's not the only way, modem access is cheap compared to other means, you can easily get a decent modem for under $50.
If you would like to spend more money consider a US Robotics modem.
Modems are available as internal, fit inside your computer and external outside your system. People install internal modems because they are less expensive and don't take space. An external modem will add more wires to your computer since you will need a separate power supply...

...and Internet account

InternetBefore purchasing a modem, you need to get an internet account by subscribing to an ISP - Internet Service Provider - company that hooks you to the net.
Many computer users wonder if they can be directly connected to the internet, it's possible, but take my advice the ISP will save you lots of $$$, I mean really lots...

If you've living in the US or UK most ISPs offer high speed Internet access. In the Middle East and countries like Lebanon, ask your ISP what access speed they offer. The higher is better, a fast ISP will save you lots of phone bills especially if you will be downloading movies and songs off the net.
The latest fad is 56K modems
(56K indicates the speed of your modem)
Make sure your ask your ISP if 56K modems are supported, or else you will be spending money for nothing, don't be fooled by people saying that a 56K modem can speed up your internet experience, it will not work unless your ISP supports 56K modems.
Try your best to find an ISP with 56K or higher speeds.

Internet connections are getting cheaper every day. Some ISPs are offering unlimited Internet access 24h a day for less than $20 a month and others are even offering free Internet Access for life. Don't be fooled by the word "free", many companies don't offer such a great service. Although it's free, it's not free of frustration.
Busy phones lines will drive you mad, and you will regret the word "free". I am not against free Internet, but when subscribing to a free service always check the rules and ask "What I am supposed to offer in return", don't sign in with the first free Internet provider you come across, examine few companies and then decide which one is the best for you, even ask friends around you, see if they are satisfied with their ISPs.
